Marine animals of the world ยท a taxonomy puzzle

Oceanclade

Daily puzzle
How to play

A mystery marine animal is hidden in the tree of life. Name any animal from the list and Oceanclade shows the most specific group your guess shares with it. Each guess grows the cladogram, and the rank checklist fills in as you get closer: phylum, class, order, family, genus, and finally species.

For example, if the answer is a manta ray and you guess a great white shark, you learn the mystery animal is in Elasmobranchii, the sharks and rays.

Hints reveal clues about the animal (where it lives, how deep, what it eats, then its size). Each hint costs one guess. On Hard, the closeness meter is hidden, so you judge how close you are from the group names. Branch colors show each animal's phylum. Hover over or tap any branch or animal in the cladogram for details.

Conservation statuses come from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, checked in October 2026 through the citations on Wikipedia and through FishBase. Statuses can change after that date. The family tree is simplified from current scientific classifications. Descriptions and fun facts were written for Marizooa and checked against Wikipedia and FishBase.
